One of the most well-known walking routes near Bowland Retreat Lodges, which can be seen from the comfort of your own lodge, is the climb up Pendle Hill. At 557 meters high, this peak not only provides a vigorous hike but also delivers stunning panoramic views of the Ribble Valley. Starting from the historic village of Barley, hikers traverse lush greenery and rocky paths.
The typical hike to the summit takes about two to three hours, depending on your fitness level and choice of trail. The reward for your effort is the breath-taking sights, particularly enchanting during sunrise or sunset when the valley is bathed in soft light. Pendle Hill is steeped in history, particularly linked to the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. This intriguing aspect adds a special atmosphere to your hiking adventure, making it not just a physical journey but a walk through history.

Next, we have the charming Tolkien Trail, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien, who spent part of his childhood in this breath-taking area. With an easy/medium route difficulty, this 9 - 12 km route (depending which you choose) offers a leisurely walking experience through enchanting woodlands, ancient oak trees, and peaceful riverside views. It starts and finishes in the small village of Hurst Green just a couple minute drive from Bowland Retreat. By concluding back at the village for some well-earned pub food, it makes it a popular Lancashire trip out.
Taking in the locations that inspired Tolkien's imaginative tales, this picturesque route allows families to connect with nature and reflect on the fantastical stories inspired by the landscape, providing both adventure and a chance for quiet reflection. L o n g r i d g e F e l l
Longridge Fell provides another amazing walking option with a variety of trails suited for all levels. With paths that cater to both novice and experienced hikers, you can customize your journey. Reaching an elevation of about 350 meters, Longridge Fell offers captivating views of the surrounding valleys and hills. Views stretching out to the Fylde Coast, the Vale of Chipping, and hills including Parlick, Fair Snape fell and Beacon Fell. A full loop around the fell spans roughly 6 miles and generally takes 3 to 4 hours to complete.
The terrain includes open moorland and forest trails, making it an excellent opportunity to study the area's diverse plant and animal life. Its close proximity ensures a memorable journey for anyone eager to immerse themselves in the stunning scenery of the Forest of Bowland AONB. It's best to undertake this hike in the summer months since certain parts can become quite boggy. Ensure you have suitable footwear for the conditions.

Just a mile from the centre of Clitheroe (15 min walk), this nature reserve features more than 20 permanent artworks. The trail passes through Brungerley Park and Cross Hill Quarry, it is overseen by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. You'll enjoy beautiful views of the Forest of Bowland and The River Ribble greatly enhances the hiking experience, offering its own array of wildlife such as kingfishers, herons, salmon, sandpipers, otters, bats, and numerous other animal and bird species. You might even spot deer! A circular route, taking roughly an hour, approximately 2.5 km, an easier trail than most with surfaced tracks, some steep slopes and steps. Accessibility: Suitable for prams on main pathway, limited disabled access.
A good family choice, spotting the well crafted sculptures along your way!

A S P I N A L L A R M S C I R C U L A R
Explore this 4.3-km circular trail, generally seen as a moderately challenging path, taking just over an hour to complete. This circular pub walk starts from the Aspinall Arms in Little Mitton, Bowland Retreat's nearest pub, situated just 1.2 miles away. This 17th century coaching inn, provides lovely views over the river, with a fabulous large beer garden and outdoor dining area in the warmer months. It makes it an ideal lunch spot before or after your walk. The walking route traverses the beautiful Ribble Valley, following a combination of riverside paths, grazing fields, and wild moorland offering excellent views throughout. The fields can become very muddy after rain, so good boots are essential. You will need to navigate several kissing gates and four stiles, some of which are quite narrow! Keep in mind that you will be sharing some of the pastures with cattle and/or sheep, so take care.
