Top Cycle Routes from Bowland Retreat Lodges
1. Ribble Valley Village Loop (20–30 miles – Moderate)
This scenic route showcases some of the valley’s most iconic views. Ideal for moderate-level cyclists looking for a rewarding loop.
Highlights:
Depart from Bowland Retreat Lodges
Pass through Bashall Town, ride to the charming Waddington village (great for a mid-morning coffee)
Picturesque route through West Bradford, Grindleton village and Downham.
Through to Worston, Pendleton Wiswell and finally the popular Whalley village.
From Whalley you can loop back up to Mitton or extend further to visit the delights of HurstGreen, an ice cream in Millies Cafe or a pint at the Shireburn Arms.
Finally head back to Bowland Retreat where your luxury lodge is waiting for you!
Local Tip: Stop for lunch at the Assherton Arms in Downham - country pub perfection.
2. Mitton - Slaidburn - Whitewell loop (25 - 30 miles)
Description
Head north from the lodges following signs for Newton-in-Bowland ( 5miles)
Enjoy open views of the Forest of Bowland AONB as you gently climb past farms and meadows.
Newton is a quiet, charming hamlet with a historic feel — worth a short pause.
Continue north on to Slaidburn (3 miles). This stretch is a gentle downhill into the picturesque village.
Stop here for refreshments — there’s a lovely café (like The Riverbank Tearoom) and a historic church.
Leave Slaidburn heading south-east to Whitewell (7 miles)
This is one of the most beautiful parts of the route — expect stunning views, stone walls, and occasional sheep.
Descend into the Hodder Valley and reach Whitewell, home to the iconic Inn at Whitewell — a good lunch or beverage stop. Also the Whitewell stepping stones is a popular photo opportunity!
Whitewell to Great Mitton (6 miles). Follow Whitewell Road / Mitton Road south-west, loosely tracing the River Hodder.
It’s undulating here with a mix of shaded woodland and riverside sections.
Great Mitton is a lovely village with a historic church. Time to head home to your luxury lodge!
3. Ribchester - Longridge Explorer (35–45 miles – Advanced)
For experienced cyclists, this challenging route offers rewarding climbs and remote beauty in the Forest of Bowland AONB. A terrain offering undulation with some steep climbs and fast descents.
Start by heading south on Mitton Road toward Whalley Road (B6243).
Follow the B6243 east, turning right onto Ribchester Road (quiet country lanes).
Enjoy pastoral views as you pass through Hurst Green and Dutton.
Drop into Ribchester, a charming village on the River Ribble with Roman history.
Leave Ribchester heading west then north toward Gallows Lane, climbing gently.
Follow Lower Road up to Longridge, with excellent views of Longridge Fell and pit stop.
Exit Longridge east along Jeffrey Hill or Birdy Brow — both provide beautiful climbs.
Head to Chipping (narrow and quiet lanes take care).
Chipping is a quaint village with a great deli and a tearoom — a good place to refuel.
Leave Chipping north via Chipping Road, climbing steadily with stunning Bowland views.
You’ll skirt the edge of the Forest of Bowland AONB, descending towards Whitewell.
Head west past Bashall Eaves, then loop back down to Great Mitton and the Lodges. POPULAR PIT STOP : Old Station Cafe Longridge
